What makes some music universally popular? Rhythm is one of those elements. Musical rhythms can be mathematically defined using the temporal sequence of notes, called inter-onset intervals (IOIs). IOIs can be used to draw phase space plots (PSPs) and reveal the geometric “shape” of music.
